I am on Day 8 of the My Vision Fast. The My Vision Fast is a 21 day journey to seek and to see God's vision for your life. For more information, visit www.MyVisionFast.com. I only mention this because the scripture for reflection is actually the assigned reading for the fast on today.
You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
5 You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.
7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.
BlogFam, YOU don't know me! And that is a true statement when I read our scripture for today. Actually, if I really think about it, I do not even know if I know me like that. "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain." [Psalm 139:6] Have you ever really thought about that? I mean, have you ever really thought about how much you really do NOT even know yourself and how knowing ALL that there is to know about you is "too lofty to attain?"
Friends, I have been in many conversations where people claimed that they "know" me. I have even had experiences where people claim to not only "know" me but they will try to make decisions for me or speak up for me or maybe even try to take my place. BUT reading this scripture reminds me that if fully knowing myself is "too wonderful for me" and "too lofty for me to attain," how can anyone even attempt to do any of those things? I do like to think that people mean well but the truth of the matter is that their well-meaning intentions fall short of all that they think they know.
I am continuously and reverently AMAZED at how AWESOME our God is! And to think that that God is the ONLY one in the universe who completely knows everything there is to know about me and God STILL loves me is worth giving God praise! I cannot lie. There are things that I learn about other people and I will adjust my view of them, distance myself from them, limit my conversations with them, and do whatever I need to do to protect myself from them because of what I think "I know" about them. The flip side is that others have done the same because of what they think they know about me. Such is life. We pass judgments and offer critiques and fall in love based on what we think we know about another person. But this scripture reveals that WE don't even know ourselves, much less a whole other person.
Think about it. How many decisions have you made based on what YOU think you know about someone? How many decisions have been made based on what someone thought they knew about YOU? And the answer to BOTH questions is: Way too many decisions to count in a lifetime! So, what are we to do with the ignorance that has been revealed to us on today?
Well, I suggest that we go to the ONE who knows everything there is to know about YOU and ME and EVERYBODY else and still LOVES us anyway! We go to God and we ask God to help us to get to know ourselves. We ask God to help us to know what we need to know to be in relationship with our neighbors. AND we ask God to give us a love for ourselves that helps us to keep one of the greatest commandments which is to LOVE our neighbor as we LOVE ourselves.
That is what we are to do... AND stop acting like you know about others because you probably have only barely scratched the surface of getting to know your own self.
GOD LOVES YOU and I DO TOO!!!
Blessings, Glory, and Sunshine!!!
