Gone But NOT Forgotten! - Mark 16:19-20

Mark 16:19-20
After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.

BlogFam, I have experienced the passing of three very significant influences in my life – my two grandmothers and my godmother.  These three women were phenomenal in their own right.  Though it has been a number of years since their passing, I still feel like they are with me and I know that they are now apart of that great cloud of witnesses resting in the Savior’s care.  I pause for a moment every time one of them crosses my mind. I pause and I think about how special they were and the lessons they taught and the examples they set as women of faith.  They shared so much with me while they were here and now they are gone.  They have made their transition into life everlasting and while I wish they could physically be apart of my life, I know that the way that I choose to live my life is partly a result of what they have sown into me and for all they have done, I am grateful.  They are gone but they will never be forgotten.
Is there anyone in your life that has made a positive impact upon you and they are no longer alive to see how their influence has shaped you into the man or woman you are today?
Name that one person.
Think about a specific lesson that that person taught you.
Pause for a moment in their honor.
Now THANK GOD for the gift of their presence for that season in your life.
Friends, I think that we perhaps need to do this more often.  We need to take a moment and just THANK GOD for the noteworthy influences we have had in our lives who are no longer with us.  And we also need to think about the people in our lives to whom we could also share what has so graciously been shared with us by those who are no longer here.
I do not mean for this blogpost to cause you to dwell on the pain of your loss. On the contrary, I want you to smile and to think about the positive and happy times you spent with the one who is not here to celebrate your life with you.  I want you to celebrate and then share those same lessons with someone else.
There are moments in Scripture where we must simply imagine the feelings of those we read about.  Mark 16:19-20 is one of those places.  Mark uses NO words to capture the emotion of the moment.
After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.
Did they cry?  Did they grieve for the Lord at all?  Did they comfort one another?  Was there a repast?  Did people stop by their homes and bring them food or sit with them as they mourned the leaving of their Lord?
Jesus spoke and then He was gone.  His assignment on this earth had come to an end and it was now time for the disciples to mourn and then to carry on.  While I do wonder about the intensity of the emotions in that moment; I do appreciate that the absence of those details helps us to focus on the life of the disciples beyond that one moment.
Perhaps, far too many times we get stuck in our own grief and forget that we are still here as living, breathing, beings full of purpose and potential.  We are still here because there is still work for us to do.  And while the nuances of our particular individual assignments may differ, at the very heart of all that we do, our assignment is very much like that of the disciples –
Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.
We are to keep living!  After you have received your assignment from the Lord for the next season in your life, in spite of the loss you experience, you MUST fulfill your assignment.  And as you move forward day by day, step by step the Lord WILL work with you and confirm His word for your life, just as He did for the disciples in the text.  There will be signs to accompany your work as long as you are seeking to complete all that our Lord has called for you to do.
Their Lord was gone but He most certainly was not forgotten because they continued to live by what He had taught them before He left.  I believe that they felt the presence of the Lord every time they did anything in Jesus name.  I believe that their precious memories lingered because they were obedient to the wisdom the Lord had imparted to them while He was there.  I believe that the mourning that I can only imagine that they experienced, when Jesus was taken up into heaven, was curbed by their desire to live to their highest and best potential in thankful response to ALL that the Lord had done for them.
My sistas and brothas, our loved ones –friends and family members – are gone and it is OK not to forget them.  However, I pray that your memories would be your motivation to go out and preach – teach – sing – dance – play – laugh –smile – study - encourage – uplift – seek justice – be merciful – walk humbly - to live your BEST life  EVERYWHERE, NOW!  And KNOW that the Lord is with you and will confirm His presence in Your life as you keep moving forward.  Friends, that person my be gone but not forgotten BUT you are still here, SO KEEP LIVING!!!
God Loves You and I do too!
