TONGUE TIED! - Mark 16:8

Mark 16:8
Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

BlogFam, Have you ever been tongue tied to the point where you decided to just give up all effort to speak what was on your mind?  There are some times in our lives when we give up  expressing our perspective, our opinions, and our view.  We give up because we are unsure, intimidated, self-conscious, or just scared.
One of the most powerful means of communication is our voice.  Our voices come in a beautiful array of tones and when our voices are used to speak the virtues and the truth that we hold dear, we join an unending conversation that all of humanity has contributed to which may or may not produce a harmoniously unified sentiment.  And that is OK because it is important for all of us to at least be open to hearing more than our own voice including those with dissonant tones and priorities.
There is a reason that God created each of us to express ourselves.  I am clear that our voice is only ONE means of expression because some do so through art, music, poetry, essays, dance, mime, sign language, and so many other ways; however, for the purpose of our reflection on today, the VOICE is what has become silent and I hope that we would not follow the example of these women who were given a word from God’s messenger but –
Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb.
They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.
This is such an unfortunate witness to such a glorious and peculiar occasion.  Jesus was crucified.  Jesus died. Jesus was buried in a tomb.  The women go to put spices on Jesus’ body and meet a messenger from God who informs them that Jesus is not there.  Jesus has risen and they were supposed to go tell the disciples and Peter to meet Jesus in Galilee, just as He had said. BUT –
Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb.
They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.
Now, as much as we might want to criticize these women and their choice to be silent as the Gospel of Mark has recorded this moment, let us all just take a minute and look in the mirror. Have you ever been tongue tied to the point where you decided to just give up all effort to speak what was on your mind?  When is the last time you made a prophetic remark about the injustices you see in your community?  When is the last time you respectfully spoke truth to an authority figure who was clearly being rude or disrespectful to his or her subordinates?  When is the last time you conveyed a Word of Knowledge or Wisdom to someone who was about to make a choice that was not in their best interest, a choice that was going to bring them harm?
We have all had those moments when we trembled at the thought of being the only one who said something.  We have all had those moments when we were bewildered by the lack of courage we observed in those who were directly impacted by the scandal of certain situations.  We have all had a moment when we fled from what was facing us because we did not want to deal with it or address it or believe that it was actually happening.  We have all had a moment when WE, like thew omen we see in Mark 16, said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. .  We have all been TONGUE TIED!
Unfortunately, Mark does not record a moment of repentance or regret where we can see how they recovered from their choice NOT to say anything to anyone.  BUT, perhaps, on today, that is what we need to know.  Perhaps, on today, we need to be reminded that there are moments when we are invited to share our perspective, our opinion, our thoughts on WHATEVER the issue may be – especially when a virtuous and truthful offering of communication is necessary – yet, because we are afraid, we miss the moment and the assignment that God had ordained for our voice to be heard is left incomplete.
This is where verse 8 leaves us. It leaves us quiet. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. They were TONGUE TIED.
So, my friends, I am grateful for this passage of Scripture.  It makes me think about the things I should have spoken up about on behalf of myself and others.  It makes me think about all of the missed opportunities to share a resurrecting word to the dying morale of friends and family.  It makes me think about the times when I allowed the bullying of other’s push me to not say anything at all.  It makes me think about how many times we all have been given a Word from the Lord and FEAR puts us on lock-down to prevent the world from hearing our voice.
It makes me think and it also makes me PRAY.
And on today, I pray that when we hear a word from the Lord our hearts and our minds would be open to receive it.  I pray that our hands and our feet would be prepared to live it.  I pray that our tongue would be ready to speak it.  I pray that the Lord would unlock opportunities for all of us to speak a word of resurrecting power with our tongues that have been untied for such a time as this.  I pray that we would not tremble or be bewildered that we are the ones through whom God has chosen to proclaim the Good News.  I pray that we would say something to everyone who needs to hear words of knowledge and wisdom, truth and justice, grace and mercy.  I pray that our FAITH in GOD would overcome our FEARS of failure, rejection, persecution, and intimidation because we must use our own voice to speak – and not hide behind the voice of another.  I pray that we would all repent for the times when we chose to disobey with our silence and that on today we celebrate this NEW day to boldly and courageously be our Lord’s vocal representatives in the earth!
