Who Will Roll the Stone Away? - Mark 16:1-4

Mark 16:1-4
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body.
Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”
But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.

BlogFam, Have you ever asked the question these women asked about situations in your own life? WHO WILL ROLL THE STONE AWAY?  You are on your way to do what is customary, what is expected of you to do, that which is the best choice for you in the moment and you know that there are pending obstacles, hindrances, complications, and problems that have yet to confront you along your journey.  AND as you proceed, you ask yourself, your colleagues, your companions, your co-horts – WHO WILL ROLL THE STONE AWAY?
In life, the STONE can represent the Stone of– people, finances, transportation, grades, teachers, co-workers, supervisors, family, friends, attitudes, grudges, ANYTHING or ANYONE that you anticipate would be a barrier to keep you from fulfilling your purpose, your responsibilities, your assignment of the hour.
WHO WILL ROLL THE STONE AWAY? This is the question that these women asked each other as they were on their way to the tomb.  They were bringing spices to anoint Jesus’ body as was customary in that day and this question almost seems to be an afterthought for them who were already on the road to their destination.  I can only imagine that they got together and Mary Magdalene was probably the leader who organized this trip.  She said – Ladies, I have no idea what happened to those disciples but WE need to go to the tomb and care for the body of our Lord.  And the women agreed.  She said Great!  Now, what spices will you each of you bring to support this effort?  They each volunteered to bring the appropriate sweet spices to anoint Him, to embalm him in order to keep His body from putrefaction, or decomposition and decay.  Each of them had their assignments and then they all agreed to go very early on the first day of the week after Sabbath and just after sunrise.  They had a plan and they had worked out the details of their plan EXCEPT one major detail that they asked each other on the way to the tomb. WHO WILL ROLL THE STONE AWAY?
I have no doubt that they knew where Jesus body laid as they discussed their plans to visit His tomb.  I have no doubt that they even knew that the tomb was a cave-like structure with a huge stone covering the entrance.  I have no doubt that they were ready to do all that they had planned to do upon entering the tomb.  And I have no doubt that they obviously did not think through the details as it relates to anticipating the obvious and overt challenge of removing the stone.
WHO WILL ROLL THE STONE AWAY? My friends, haven’t we all been in the same predicament?  We have very good intentions and a solid motivation to carry out our plans, but, for some reason, we often do not think through the obvious and overt STONES in our lives.  I know that we are to walk by faith and not by sight but some things, the Lord will reveal and we will avoid the truth about what He has already revealed.  We will ignore what will be an obvious obstacle to our reaching our final outcome.  Why do we not want to talk about the STONES?  Why are we afraid to name the STONES in our lives?  What happened the last time you attempted to remove a STONE that keeps you from even acknowledging the obvious STONES in this new situation?
There are some unexpected stones in our lives that come and we have to deal with them as they come.  On the other hand, there are some stones that were there from the beginning and as we move forward along our journey, we know that we must face that stone at some point but we choose not to properly prepare ourselves for the STONE’s removal and find ourselves in a state of worry, confusion, intense concern, uneasiness, anxious, fearful – ALL because we choose to NOT accept the truth about the STONES that our Lord has already revealed.  Friends, STOP acting like you do not know about the STONES in your life and start asking the right ONE -
WHO WILL ROLL AWAY THE STONE? Who will be the one to remove the obstacle to our destiny?  Who will be the one to knock down the hurdles in our lives that prevent us from fulfilling our assignments?  Who will roll away anything that is blocking our blessings?
And they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”
But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.
My sistas and brothas, there will clearly be obvious - and very large - obstacles along your journey that will come into your path to divert your attention from your purpose.  And not every roadblock will be a surprise.  You will have fair warning about some of your stones.  These women knew that there was a stone in front of the tomb in their planning meeting.  Perhaps they tabled that discussion.  Perhaps the one who they had asked to come with them to roll the stone away did not show up.  Perhaps they figured they could roll it away themselves and realized while they were on their way that that was a foolish idea but no one had the courage to say it was foolish.  Whatever their thoughts might have been, Mark records that on their way to the tomb they asked each other, WHO WILL ROLL THE STONE AWAY?
And then I love verse 4!  It says BUT WHEN they LOOKED UP.  Friends, when they looked UP, the stone had already been rolled away!  Isn’t that good news?  I am so grateful that for you and I, even when we avoid, ignore, evade, or disregard the obvious obstacles  - the smalla nd the large ones - the Lord has revealed to us, by the grace of God, WHEN WE LOOK UP through prayer and praise while we press our way through, in the midst of our looking UP, the barriers will be broken, the walls will come tumbling down, and the STONES WILL BE ROLLED AWAY.
WHO WILL ROLL AWAY YOUR STONE(S)? LOOK UP and You will have your answer!
