I DOUBT IT! - Matthew 28:16-17

I Doubt IT!
Matthew 28:16-17
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.

I wonder what thoughts flooded the disciples’ minds when they saw the resurrected body of their teacher who had just a few days ago died on a cross and was buried in a tomb.  I wonder how receptive they were to the message those women shared with them that it was time for them to meet Jesus in Galilee. I wonder how many questions they asked each other and what other murmurings filled the room at this invitation. I do not know but we do know that they did heed the message of these women sharing the instruction of their Lord to go meet Him who had died, meet Him in Galilee.
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.
And like the women who had already seen the resurrected Lord,
When they saw him, they worshiped him;
They knew exactly what to do upon first seeing their Lord, their teacher, their friend, the Son of God. They worshipped Him.  I can only imagine how precious that moment was to them and for Jesus as well; however, I do not want to dwell there on today because in that same verse it continues to say – BUT some doubted.
When they saw him, they worshiped him; BUT some doubted.
Jesus is standing in their midst. They knew what He had experienced just a few days ago, even if they were nowhere to be found. They knew the suffering that His body had endured and the despair He felt and expressed.  They knew how controversial His life, ministry, and His death had been.  I imagine that they recalled the many lessons He had taught them especially the lesson of Him being the sacrificial Lamb, the long awaited Messiah and now here He stands. He stands before them, alive.  He is alive and they see Him in front of them and the text says that THEY worshipped Him. BUT some doubted.
Some disciples were uncertain about THIS.  They were questioning: Is this He who walked with us and talked with us?  Is this Mary’s Son and our healing teacher?  Could it really be true that He did rise again?
BUT some doubted.  They worshipped, BUT in their minds some thought it was unlikely that Jesus was right here in front of them.  They worshipped, but some did not trust that He who stood before them, was Jesus.
Friends, do you doubt what you see right in front of you?  I know that this sounds like a strange question but if you really think about it, it is not so far from the way we process things.  We look, we observe, we study, we examine, and we still ask – is THIS it?  We are looking at IT and we have even identified IT as being IT and yet in the back of our minds we still doubt that IT really is IT.  We doubt that God really did answer our prayer – perform this miracle – raise us up into newness of life.  We have heard God’sanswer.  We are looking at God’s answer.  We have even celebrated because God has answered and yet we still doubt that IT is the answer.
Jesus promised that He would rise again and here He stands in front of His closest friends and they go through the motion of worship but in the back of their minds, some of them doubted that He was IT.
Why do we do this, my friends? Why do we look at the manifestation of God’s promises and God’s peace in our lives and doubt what it is that we see? Far too many times, we think that our eyes are playing tricks on us and we continue to wait and ponder and long for what is right in front of us.  Our doubt deceives us and keeps us from being fully present in the moment that our Lord meets us where we are, where He has asked us to be.
When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
We can go through the motions of meeting Jesus and worshipping Jesus and in the back of our minds, we will still doubt Jesus.  There are so many reasons why we doubt Jesus.  Why do you doubt Him?  Why do you doubt the presence of the Lord in your life?  Why do you doubt the power of the Lord in your life?  Why do you doubt the promises of the Lord in your life?   Why do you doubt the presents of the Lord in your life?
When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
Friends, on today, I pray that your worship overcomes your doubt.  I pray that you would focus on what you KNOW to be truth and what gives you life and peace.  I pray that any uncertainty you have regarding the next steps in your life or the next relationship or the next career move or the next class or the next major decision – I pray that you would see the hand of the Lord pointing you in the right direction.
And when you see the hand of the Lord, showing you the way to go, the Lord will confirm but you must also comply with what He has shown you.  What the LORD shows you in front of your eyes, IT is real.  IT will keep you in the center of His will.  IT will bless you.  IT will sustain you.  IT will bring you closer to Him and God will use the little bit of faith you have to transform your doubt into an avenue of your deliverance, your prosperity, your call, and then the Lord our God will commission you to greater work in the Kingdom of God!
