Go Take A Bath! - Psalm 51-10-12

Psalm 51:10-12
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

BlogFam, when is the last time you took a bath or a shower? Wait a second!  PLEASE do not answer that out loud –or maybe, not at all! (LOL!)  Whether you took a bath or shower recently or in the distant past 24 hours, I think that we can all agree that taking a bath or a shower is a non-negotiable practice of our personal hygiene.

We clean our bodies because it is a way that we care for our temples, we prevent odors from emanating from our temples, and we make our temples tolerable to the nostrils of the company we keep.  We clean our temples to remove dirt, excess oils, and the elements of the environments we have been in.  We clean our temples so that we can feel fresh, smell good, and look presentable to the public eye.

Now there are some men and women who choose not to embrace this type of care on a regular basis or perhaps circumstances will not allow them to do so or maybe some are physically unable to do so and must allow others to clean their bodies for them.  Whatever the situation, I think the majority of the human community greatly appreciates the care we give to our bodies – however that happens - even if simply for the sake of our own noses.

Friends, I am pretty sure I could go on and on about this matter but as usual, the most simple things in the natural often provide the most profound illustrations for the spiritual things in our lives.  As we read a few verses from Psalm 51, I wonder how clean do you keep your heart, your mind, or your spirit?  We rarely think of the UN-cleanliness of our souls as yielding a stench.  We just do not think of our souls in that way.  I am clear that is because we cannot smell with our noses what is really going on in our own hearts or in the hearts of others in the same way as a person who has not bathed in a while.

BUT What if that were NOT the case?  What if we could smell our sin?  What if we could smell the foulest of odors every time we lied or were disrespectful or even had a naughty thought?  I wonder how much cleaner our lives would be if we could smell sin.  I think this is a valid thought.  Think about it.  We try to mask certain physical odors with perfume, body spray, air freshener, and candles.  We try to cover up what is an unpleasant scent in order to make our presence or the room a more tolerable place to be.  We do our best to not be the one who is stank!

I remember an incident many years ago when there was a rank odor coming from a certain room in our dorm in college and in the most polite way possible a friend of the girl had to courageously address the issue because others had begun to talk.  Now, how do you tell someone you love and care about that they need to get themselves together because there is an odor that is not pleasant that is escaping the confines of their dorm room?  I do not know, but she did and the issue was able to be corrected.

Likewise, my sistas and brothas, as much as we try to hide the habits, relationships, and other transgressions that are not pleasing to God from God, the more we really do stink.  We think we can mask our stench by going to church, volunteering in the community, helping the less fortunate, quitting whatever it is we were doing for Lent; but those cover-ups will only go so far with people and they get you nowhere with God!  NOBODY is invisible to the All Seeing One.  NOTHING and NOBODY!

We think we can hide but after a while that which is on the inside of us will be made evident on the outside and your sins will tell on you because the enemy will keep silent for only so long!  The enemy wants people to know that he has a hold on you.  The enemy wants people to think that he is winning the battle for your soul.  DO NOT LET THE ENEMY WIN!

Besides, I do not know why we even attempt to mask the odor of sin from our Heavenly Father as if He would never find out, as if He did not know what you were going to do before you actually did what you did do.

BlogFam, today, I think that we ALL just need to pray the psalmist’s prayer –
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

We all need to take some spiritual baths and showers and just soak in the presence of the Almighty God.  We need to move beyond trying to wipe the hot spots just to get by and be drenched in the cleansing blood of the Lamb.  We all need to be purified and renewed and so grateful that the grace and unmerited favor of God has caused our God to continue to desire for us to seek His presence.  Our God desires to cleanse and restore us in the righteousness we have through no goodness of our own.  And once we have experienced this cleaning of the soul, our God will sustain us.  God will keep us holy and keep us pure.

Friends, let’s get cleaned up!  I may not be able to smell your sin and possibly neither can the people around you but GOD CAN!  You are not able to hide or mask anything from the Omniscient One.  That is so not possible!

So, Let’s get Cleaned Up!  It is time to take a bath!
  1. Would you be free from the burden of sin? There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood; Would you o’er evil a victory win? There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood.
  2. Would you be free from your passion and pride? There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood; Come for a cleansing to Calvary’s tide; There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood.
  3. Would you be whiter, much whiter than snow? There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood; Sin-stains are lost in its life-giving flow; There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood.
  4. Would you do service for Jesus your King? There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood; Would you live daily His praises to sing? There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood.
There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder-working pow’r
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder-working pow’r
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

Friends, Let us get CLEANED UP so that we can be FILLED UP with the Holy Ghost and then be USED UP by the power of God to SPEAK UP about the Gospel in this world and not allow our sins to STINK UP our testimony of how the Lord RAISED US UP from darkness to LIGHT UP this world!

Go take a Bath!  Get clean and renewed!  Stay in the presence as long as you need to, and surrender to the power of God to restore and sustain you!

Friends, I think I hear some Holy Bath Water running…

Create in me a pure/clean heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
