SPEAK YOUR TRUTH, Do Not Back Down! - John 8:31-32

Have you ever wish you would have said something in the moment that you later regret that you did NOT say?  I know we often regret comments we have made in the heat of the moment but what about the things we do not say?  Have you ever regretted NOT saying something?  I have.  As verbose as I am, there have certainly been moments in my life where I later wish I would have said something or said something differently.  I usually hate that I omitted a comment that was on my heart but I kept it in my heart because either I was afraid or I just felt like I would get another opportunity to share it at another time or some other reason that seemed good enough at the time.

There are so many reasons why we refrain from saying the things our hearts really want us to say.  We refrain instead of releasing our thoughts, feelings, opinions, convictions, testimonies, and ideas for so many different reasons and then later we are burdened by the weight of the truth that would have given us a freedom of the soul in a moment that we cannot get back.  It is not that you will not get another opportunity to speak your truth, but another opportunity is not the same opportunity as it was before.  It is different.  Same truth.  Possibly the same effect. But it is still different. And we oftentimes regret our restraint.

My sistas and brothas, your voice is so powerful and we need to hear you speak YOUR truth.  We need to hear your truth especially about two things  - Your Self and Your Salvation.

When we do not speak our own truth, if we are not our own strongest advocate, if we are not our own spokesperson, we cannot expect others to carry the weight of their truth and ours too.  We must be able to speak the truth that gives us the freedom to love ourselves, to be ourselves, to celebrate ourselves, to promote ourselves!  We must be able to speak the truth that gives us the freedom to consider others and to glorify God!  We must be able to speak the truth that leaves an impression on this world that is uniquely our own. Friends, your voice is so beautiful but we will never know it if you do not SPEAK UP!

We must also speak the truth about our Salvation!  In other words, we must not be ashamed to make known to the world that Jesus is the solid rock upon which we stand.  We must not be intimidated by people of other religious traditions who attempt to silence our voice because it is different.  We must not allow others to misrepresent the core tenets of our faith.  And though I see the world through a Christian lens, I acknowledge that this principle could also be applied for those who see the world through a different pair of lenses.  Unfortunately, because we are ashamed or intimidated or have been misrepresented, we shut up when it comes to taking a position that is grounded in the scripture as we have come to understand it.  And because of the many lenses of Christianity due to denominationalism or non-denominationalism or other New Age variations on Christianity, many believers are confused as to what to say when they do speak up.  But that is a post for another day.  I just want to encourage you on the point that we need to hear your voice as it relates to the deepest part of your soul.

John 8:31-32
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him,
If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

In grammar, If-Then statements are sentences discussing factual implications or hypothetical situations and their consequences.  These statements include a conditions clause in the present tense which refers to a future event,  a current event that may or may not be true, or an event which could be verified in the future.  The result can be in the past, present or future.  Jesus statement is an IF-THEN statement with triple consequences.

CONDITION - IF ye continue in my word,
CONSEQUENCES - THEN are ye my disciples AND ye shall know the truth
AND the truth shall make you FREE.

The consequences are the results of meeting one condition. We are disciples if we continue in His Word.  We know truth and are made free by the truth that we know if we continue in His Word.  This is a very powerful realization!

So, now, I wonder if many of us are walking and thinking and speaking as men and women who are in bondage because we have not continued [lingered, remained, stayed] in the word?  Think with me, again, about those moments when you did not speak up about Your Self or Your Salvation. I wonder if those moments would have been marked with the sound of our voices if prior to these moments we had been lingering in the Word.  I wonder if the opportunities for us to speak our truth were missed because we had neglected to stay in the word and therefore we said things we never should have said or we said nothing at all.  I wonder if the ways in which we silence our own voices are a result of our not remaining in the Word of God.  I wonder.

Friends, today is a new day.  We did not speak up yesterday but I believe that our God will open new ways for Your Self and Your Salvation to be expressed through your voice!  And because we will continue in the word moving forward, we will declare our identity as disciples through every word that comes out of our mouths AND we will know truth AND we will also speak truth that makes us free.  And my sistas and brothas, there is NOTHING like being FREE in your own mind and with your own mouth!

SPEAK YOUR TRUTH, DO NOT BACK DOWN! And when you feel the urge to silence your own voice because you think it is not strong enough or sturdy enough or you do not feel safe enough, I pray that you would CONTINUE in the Word and that through the Word made flesh Your voice will gain everything You need to SPEAK UP!
