Are you afraid of the quiet? Now before you roll your eyes or dismiss my question as ridiculous. I want to ask you another question – have you ever asked the Lord – HOW LONG MUST I WAIT FOR____________________ [Fill in the Blank]? If you have asked this question, then that just might be a clue that you are afraid of the quiet or at least the quiet makes you slightly uncomfortable.
I have waited on a lot of things from the Lord. I have prayed and waited for an answer, a sign, and some kind of clue that the Lord at least heard my prayer. I have even reminded the Lord – Hey, Jesus, I am waiting on You! I cannot speak for anyone else but I have waited and then wondered when the Lord’s timing was going to be the right time. I have waited and wondered when that kairos moment would hit and then I could move forward. I have waited and then wondered why everybody else seems to be the recipients of blessings and favor that so many preachers and Gospel singers have told me I deserve. I have prayed. I have waited. And I have experienced the quietness of the Lord.
I know this might sound strange; but, BlogFam, I am trying to offer a different perspective on the circumstances that surround these seasons of waiting. Have you ever considered that, perhaps, the quietness of this hour IS the gift? Have you ever considered that, perhaps, the quietness of this hour IS the response that the Lord knows that you need? Have you ever considered that, perhaps, the quietness of this hour is actually a time of preparation for your next?
Friends, on today, I invite you to re-consider this popular passage of scripture.
He leads me beside quiet waters.
WOW! Will you for one moment imagine still waters, quiet rain, and peaceful puddles? What do you see? How do you feel? And now I ask you, why would you ever choose to run away from that thought or experience? We are so used to the stormy seas, the thunderstorms, the gushing waves beating upon the boat of our life that when we are actually blessed with a drama free moment, we think it strange. We are afraid of the quiet. We are afraid that the Lord has forgotten that we are waiting. We have afraid that while nothing is happening, we are missing out on everything. We are afraid that our lack of progress has hindered our opportunities to be successful. We are afraid of the quiet.
My sistas and brothas, today, I invite you to re-consider this moment of blessed quietness as a holy moment where the Lord is choosing to give you peace and rest that the Lord knows will not come so easily when the next chapter unfolds. For you see, the Lord knows that in the next chapter or two, you will walk through the valley of the shadow of death and though you may fear no evil because of the Lord’s presence, you still have to face it and walk through it. The Lord knows that some of you have been through a lot in your life and the best response that the Lord can give you is to be quiet. Some of you are not prepared for what the Lord has in store and the Lord knows that the best response that the Lord can give you is to be quiet. Some of you are just anxious and talk too much and the best response that the Lord can give you is to be quiet. Some of you thrive off of drama and the best response that the Lord can give you is to be quiet. Therefore, in the wisdom of our Lord, He chooses to lead us beside quiet waters.
YES, we all need to know what quietness feels like. YES, we all need to be assured that the Lord is with us in the quiet seasons. YES, we all need to be led by the Lord beside quiet waters.
BlogFam, why are you afraid of the quiet? Will you just surrender to this holy moment and follow His lead? Why not cast your fear of quietness aside and THANK GOD that for right now, there are quiet waters? The Lord’s silence is not a sign that the Lord has forgotten and it does not necessarily mean that the Lord’s answer to your prayer request is no. It just means that, for right now, He is leading you beside quiet waters. And just as we encourage exuberant praise for our God, we must also embrace the blessed quietness of our God.
Will you follow His lead?
