HURRY UP & WAIT! - Psalm 69:1-5

I am not a parent but I have observed a countless number of interactions between parents and their young children.  One very common occurrence is the instruction from a parent telling their child to ‘STOP whatever it is they are doing and SIT DOWN.’  This command is usually given with urgency especially if the child is being disruptive of the peace, disrespectful to others or dismissive to the parent's original instruction.  The intensity of the parent’s command to the child progresses the longer the child decides that obedience to the parent’s command is not a priority.
Sit Down.  SIT Down. SIT DOWN!
In Psalm 69, I detect a sense of urgency on the part of the writer pleading with God to move on his behalf:
SAVE ME, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.
I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.
They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty...
I would probably feel the same way if I looked around and found myself in these circumstances.  To be honest with you, I have felt the same way.  I have felt overwhelmed.  I have felt like I had no options.  I have felt weary of my own crying.  At the same time, like earthly parents who give instructions out of their love and concern for their children, I must also admit that I, like those disobedient children, have heard the intensity of my heavenly parent’s command increase as long as I have decided that being obedient was not a priority. BE HONEST.  Our entire BlogFam has been in this situation.  We have all heard the Spirit tell us to – Sit Down.  SIT Down. SIT DOWN!  AND then when we find ourselves sinking in deep mire, where there is no standing, eyes failing, feeling the hatred of others, then we cry out to God – SAVE ME O GOD! HURRY UP and SAVE ME!  We want God to move with a sense of urgency, the same urgency that we neglected to move with when He spoke to us with a still, small voice.
It is amazing how we are in such a hurry for God to move on our behalf but we are NOT in such a hurry when it comes to moving on behalf of God.  We keep God waiting on us when it comes to the way we serve in the Kingdom.  We keep God waiting when it comes to loving our neighbor as we love ourselves.  We keep God waiting when it comes to offering to God our very best with our time, our talent, and our treasure.  Yet, we still want God to HURRY UP and MOVE!  Well, BlogFam, today, I say LOOK IN THE MIRROR! Look in the mirror and tell yourself to HURRY UP and WAIT!  I know that you may feel overwhelmed.  I know that the situation may seem hopeless. I know that you have been praying about this for a long time.  However, today is the day for you to STOP being a worry wart.  STOP driving others crazy because you are full of anxiety. STOP staying up due to restless nights. WAIT on the Lord!
I can only imagine that before the Psalmist felt so overwhelmed and helpless, that God had probably given some kind of warning or instruction that may have kept him from such a predicament. The psalmist, like most of us at some point on this journey, kept right on moving, doing his own thing. We all have one or two or three reasons why we CHOOSE to NOT be in a hurry about God’s business.  What is your reason?  Are you embarrassed?  Are you scared you will miss out on something?  Are you mad because something else did not work out so you call yourself getting back at God?  Really? YET, now you find yourself where you NEED God to move in a HURRY but YOU were NOT in such a hurry when the time came for YOU to move at the initial instruction from God.
Well, let me be the one to tell you with as much compassion as I can muster – Ladies and Gents, SIT DOWN!  HURRY UP and WAIT on God!  It is time for YOU to get in a hurry about waiting for God, not rushing God, not threatening God, not turning your back on God.  SIT DOWN!  HURRY UP and WAIT on God!  It is time for YOU to rush to the place of being still to hear what God is saying to you and to see how God is already moving in your life.  While you are so busy trying to make things happen, God is inviting you to REST in Him. Your busy-ness is causing the disruption of your peace, disrespect to others because you are acting out of order and is proving that you are dismissive to the original instruction you were given by the Spirit.  Ladies and Gents, SIT DOWN!  HURRY UP and WAIT on God!
Perhaps, your waiting is a result of your prolonged disobedience and now you MUST wait a little longer than expected.  So, WAIT and pray the prayer of this psalmist –
O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.
And my Sistas and Brothas, I believe that as we come to God in a HURRY, confessing our sins and asking forgiveness, God will forgive and we will be in right standing with God.  We will then be in a better place to WAIT.  Besides, as the Chicago Mass Choir reminded us a few years ago  – YOU can’t hurry God. You just have to WAIT! You’ve gotta trust Him and give Him time, no matter how long it takes.  He’s a God you can’t hurry.  He’ll be there, don’t you worry.  He may not come when you want Him but He’sright on time!
BlogFam, we serve an ON-TIME God who deserves our attention and our obedience ON-TIME.  So, I invite you today to get in a HURRY about the business of God’s kingdom so that your time, talent, and treasure will all be used for the Glory of the ONE who continues to graciously wait on us when we are not in a hurry to respond to Him.
God Loves You and I do too!
