Christians are the BIGGEST Losers!

Christians are the BIGGEST Losers!
Matthew 16:24-25, 27

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.

For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

Greetings!

BlogFam,

The Biggest Loser is a reality television show which started in the U.S. in 2004. The show centers on overweight contestants attempting to lose the most weight for a cash prize.   The contestants always have the same goal: to LOSE the highest percentage of weight (or most weight) to become the biggest LOSER.

Now, I can tell you that this is an interesting, popular, and lucrative way to redeem the word LOSER!  Most people do not want to be called losers or to be associated with losers.  Being a loser is not something people brag about or invite someone else to become.  We do not celebrate losers.  Mean people poke fun at losers.  A loser is not very high on the social totem pole.  A loser is probably at the very bottom.

I looked up the word loser.

  • A loser is someone who has failed at a particular activity.

  • A loser is someone or something that is marked by consistently or thoroughly bad quality or performance.

  • A loser is a misfit or someone who has never been or seldom been successful at a job or personal relationship.

  • A loser is an inept person, an undesirable or annoying person, and a social failure.

Now, I am NOT going to ask you if you fit into either of the definitions above but I do have a question for the Lord.  Why in the world would He want His followers to become losers?  Why did He have to use the word LOSE when it comes to talking about the life of a disciple of Jesus Christ?  Didn’t Jesus know that one day the word LOSER was going to represent such a person as described in the definitions above?

Christians are LOSERS.

Christians are the BIGGEST Losers.

We really are. And the use of such a downer word is exactly what I believe Jesus probably needed to use in order for us to see that what we “LOSE” does not even begin to compare to what we GAIN when we surrender our lives to Him.

On the TV show, The Biggest Loser, contestants are only rewarded if they lose weight. The goal is not to maintain or gain weight.   Gaining weight is seen as a failure on that show.  That makes sense in light of the purpose of the show.  And the extent of concern from the coaches for the contestants is limited to the physical success of the men or women participating in the process.  However, the ways in which we lose or even gain weight physically cannot compare to the redemptive losing and gaining that Jesus has to offer to us.

Jesus is offering to ALL of us an extreme makeover from the inside-out AND yes, we must become the biggest LOSERS but what we GAIN is life…and that, more abundantly.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.

In other words, in order to follow Jesus, we have got to be LOSERS.

Christians are LOSERS.

Christians are the BIGGEST Losers.

We must deny ourselves everyday so that we can be open to hear, trust, and obey what the Lord would have for us to do.  And in so doing, in the denying of ourselves,in the losing of ourselves, we will find life in Christ.  This life cannot be captured by a loser on a TV program and it defies the definition of what the dictionary says a LOSER is.  For what we think we might lose is incomparable to what we gain in Christ!

For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

Christians are LOSERS.

Christians are the BIGGEST Losers.

But everything we lose, we GAIN in Christ and that makes it all worth it because life is better with Christ!!!

God Loves You and I Do Too!
