From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”
Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
Let me start off by saying that I have no idea how I would have reacted or responded to this obviously and highly emotional response from Jesus! However, Jesus response also makes me wonder how many times in my own life I have retreated because someone boldly spoke words into my life that were intended to block the purpose God had for me.
The truth is that there are “Peters” in our lives that have no problem speaking against the purpose and plans of God in our lives and UNLIKE Jesus, we listen to them. We entertain their foolishness. We internalize their commentary. And we end up missing out or at least delaying our progress toward our rightful place in the Kingdom due to our own decision to NOT tell Satan to GET THEE BEHIND ME!
Why do we do this?
Why do we so often shut up and stifle our own progress in the direction of the promises God has declared over our lives just because ONE person, ONE conversation, or ONE bad day suggests that IT shall never happen to us?
Jesus had already begun to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
I can only imagine the thoughts that ran through the minds of the disciples. Their friend, their teacher, their Lord was speaking words that confirmed the prophecies of old. They were clear about the fate of Jesus and Jesus did not shy away from sharing this truth with them. He was going to die. And he was going to die for them. What an amazing and dare I say confusingly emotional time for them!
Thus, it is no surprise that Peter would exclaim, “Never, Lord!”he said. “This shall never happen to you!”
On one level, it makes so much sense that one true friend would NOT want any hurt, harm, or danger to come to another friend. It makes sense that you might feel some kind of way if someone you consider to be a part of your family –biologically, romantically, or spiritually – was speaking of their own seemingly impending death, destruction, distraction, or depression. It makes sense that you would NOT hold your peace when someone you respect and admire tells you something that does not make sense, that does not fit within your own idea of who you think they are or what they should be aspiring to do.
Jesus explains that He is going to suffer and He is going to die and His friend says to Him - “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”
It really does feel like Peter has the right idea in mind except that he does not! And according to the text, without hesitation, stutter or stammer, Jesus tells Peter to STOP BLOCKING!!! “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely humanconcerns.”
And the response of our Lord is exactly how adamantly we must respond to anyone who would try to BLOCK us from moving forward in the direction God has called and ordained for us to go.
The question is this: In spite of how you might have shut up or shrunk back or sat down or shriveled up in the past, will YOU today decide that you will boldly declare to anyone who attempts to keep you from being faithful to God’s call on your life thus saith the Lord - “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
Like Peter, you might mean well. You might think you have my best interest at heart. You might think you are helping me in your own way. BUT the truth is you need to STOP BLOCKING!!!
Friends, your destiny is God’s divine appointment for your life. Do not allow anyone to block you from your blessing! AND the converse is true… Do not block anyone from their destiny! You must STOP BLOCKING others from pursuing God’s call on their lives! You must STOP BLOCKING those you love from living their dreams! You must STOP BLOCKING the progress of another person who is advancing toward realizing the promises of God!
Everyone should just STOP BLOCKING!!!
For when we all keep our minds FOCUSED on the concerns of God and not merely human concerns, we will not be a stumbling block to one another and together we will keep Satan behind us!
