The Transfiguration - Matthew 17:1-9

Greetings!!!

BlogFam, Please read the following verses from Matthew 17...

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

6 When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

These verses [including verses 10-13 in the same chapter] are known as THE TRANSFIGURATION.

During this brief moment on the mountain with Jesus, a selected few were privy to a glimpse of the Glory of God as they had never seen it before.  I can only imagine  the thoughts that overwhelmed their minds as they watched their friend transfigure right in front of their eyes.  It was indeed a vision that they probably could not put into words and the words that we read in the verses above cannot fully capture the sights and sounds of that holy moment.

There are so many things I could attempt to say about The Transfiguration that I will reserve but what I would like to highlight is the notion that when we are given the privilege to see the Glory of God in one special moment that is unbelievably amazing, we will be forever changed.  And the VISION that God has allowed the selected people to see is justifiably exclusive to those who were invited to the unveiling and to those who are willing to go where they needed to go to see God in this way.

BlogFam, whether we want to accept this truth or not, we see it clearly illustrated in the verses above.  When God chooses to reveal God's self in ways that give us a closer look into God's character and God's plan, it is NEVER revealed to the masses first.  The preview is given to the visionaries who are OPEN to see God in ways that they have never seen God before.  Everybody cannot handle this.  All of the disciples could not make the trip up the mountain, could not handle what was to be revealed on the mountain and probably would not know what to do with what took place on the mountain.  So, in God's infinite wisdom, only a fraction of the larger group were invited to see Jesus in a new way, in a new place.

There are so many of our friends and family who do so much talking about wanting more and wanting to experience God in a fresh way but then they close their eyes and stop up their ears and shut down the pathway to their heart because what they really want is NOT something new and exciting that could possibly lead them to go in a  totally different direction.  NO!  The majority of the people really only want to reenact an encounter they had with the Lord God weeks, months, and even years ago that will NOT challenge or disrupt their present reality but just give them a minute surge of inspiration to stay right where they are.  This is so discouraging to others in relationship with them who envision and seek God for so much more!

I do not know what Peter, James, and John expected when they were walking up that mountain but I have to believe that they expected that their lives would never be the same if they just kept climbing upward one step at a time.  BlogFam, I pray that YOU will be the types of men and women who will not look at the mountain and run away or be intimidated by its size or by what you have heard from others who walked away in fear.

On the contrary, I pray that you will climb upward, expecting to meet God and expecting to SEE God in a new way that just might change your whole life and maybe even the lives of those you left behind.  I also pray that YOU will be changed, that you will be transformed, that you will be transfigured so as to be encouraged and exalted to live as the man or woman God is calling for you to be.

And in the words of our Lord,  Do NOT be afraid!  LISTEN to what the Lord will say!  And in wisdom, until further instructions, do NOT tell anyone what it is that you have seen on the mountain!

God Loves You and I Do Too!!!!
