GOOD COMPANY [For the Lord and For Gideon!]
Judges 7: 16-25
BlogFam, every Sunday evening at 4;15 CST/5:15 EST, for nearly one year, I have been the hostess of the KIDS KORNER Radio Program! It is a 15 minute weekly ministry through which I share an encouraging word to children and teens. It is the moment where “the kids of the kingdom are overwhelmed with the King’s LOVE.” I hope that you would join us every Sunday evening by listening online at www.wigoam.com or download the Tune In Radio App on your cell and listen to AM 1570 WIGO – The Light.
On yesterday’s broadcast, I talked about how important it is to seek out good company and to keep good company. My scripture reference was Luke 1:39-45 when Mary seeks out the good company of her cousin, Elizabeth. Without going into all of the details of the broadcast message, I will summarize by saying this: Good Company is people who believe in God. Good Company is people who believe that God has placed inside of you special gifts and has made certain promises about your life. Good Company is people who believe that God is able to fulfill God’s promises in your life. It is important to seek out and to keep GOOD Company.
Gideon was finally in the midst of GOOD company. After weeding out the thousands of soldiers who were fearful and foolish, those who probably did not believe that God was able to conquer their enemies under Gideon’s leadership, anyway, Gideon was left with 300 men. And with 300 men, Gideon moved forward.
Dividing the three hundred men into three companies, he placed trumpets and empty jars in the hands of all of them, with torches inside. “Watch me,” he told them. “Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do. When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets, then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’”
Gideon gave clear instructions to those who were following him. He told them to follow his lead and to do exactly as he was going to do. This had to be a remarkable moment in Gideon’s life. From the beginning of Judges chapter 6 until this point, Gideon has come into his identity as a mighty warrior. God has placed something great inside of him that he did not even see himself. Then the Lord our God set him in the company of soldiers who were ready to follow his leadership and to fight for the Lord and for Gideon.
Mary did not choose to be the carrier of God’s only begotten Son and Gideon did not choose to be a mighty warrior but at some point, they both surrendered to the will of God for their lives. Mary sought out the GOOD company of her cousin Elizabeth and Gideon was set in the GOOD company of 300 men to lead them in war. Friends, whether you seek out good company like Mary or whether you are just set in the midst of good company like Gideon, I pray that you would know exactly what you are called to do in the moment and that you would not be afraid to take full advantage of the wisdom that your Elizabeth will provide or the strength that your army will provide.
We all NEED good company. We need good company for many reasons that all of us could name and I pray that today you would reconsider the company you keep. What would have happened if Mary sought out the company of someone who was unwise, unfaithful, unlike Elizabeth? What if Gideon had held on to the thousands of fearful and foolish soldiers that the Lord had told him to release? What do you think?
As we come to a close of another year, do you find yourself in the midst of some NOT so good company? Are you in the company of those who do not believe in God? Are you in the company of those who do not believe that God has a great work for you to do? Are you in the midst of those who do not believe God is able to do exceeding, abundantly above all that you could ever ask or think? Perhaps, you cannot give birth to greatness or move forward in victory over your enemies because of the company you are choosing to keep.
Friends, I know that it is not easy to separate from those who may have always been around, those with whom you are used to sharing, those with whom you feel comfortable and familiar. I know it is not easy to come to the realization that the company you are keeping will not help you give birth to the greatness inside of you; nor will they stand with you when it is time to go to battle. Nevertheless, it is time for you to seek out and/or to allow God to set you in the midst of GOOD company so that you can experience the fullness of God’s plan for your life.
AGAIN, perhaps, you cannot give birth to greatness or move forward in victory over your enemies because of the company you are choosing to keep.
Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands. The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!”
While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites RAN, CRYING out as they fled. When the three hundred trumpets sounded, the Lord caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other with their swords. The army fled…
BlogFam, when you are set in the midst of GOOD company, just like Gideon, you will be victorious in miraculous ways. All they had to do was blow their trumpets and crush their jars. This scared their enemies and their enemies ran like crybabies and then they turned on each other with their own swords. WOW!
When we surrender to the will of God, God will make things work in ways that will blow our minds. When we seek out the GOOD company of the Almighty and set our hearts towards the one who is Great and Mighty, when we listen and obey the instructions of the Lord, we become the kind of GOOD company that others will follow AND our enemies will turn on themselves. My sisters and brothers, are YOU good company? AND are you IN good company?
In the end… The army fled to Beth Shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel Meholah near Tabbath. Israelites from Naphtali, Asher and all Manasseh were called out, and they pursued the Midianites. Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan ahead of them as far as Beth Barah.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out and they seized the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth Barah.
They also captured two of the Midianite leaders, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was by the Jordan.
In the end, GIDEON WINS! Gideon and the GOD/GOOD company that the Lord had set him in the midst of, WINS! In the end, YOU WILL WIN if you seek God and seek to settle in the GOD company ordained for you!
