I Died and I Came Back and All I Got was Piece of Fish! Luke 24:36-44

I Died and I Came Back and All I Got was Piece of Fish!

Luke 24:36-44
While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence.

He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

Greetings!

BlogFam, I tell you the truth. I am so glad that the Bible is full of believable people.  Let me explain.  I am glad that there are people in the Bible who, like you and me, made mistakes, doubted, lied, stole, cheated, felt guilty, got scared, did less than their best, and so on.  I am glad that even those whom we celebrate as our biblical heroes and she-roes, were NOT perfect.  I am so glad that the Bible is full of believable people who did some things that make me shake my head, laugh, cry, laugh some more, rejoice, and wonder.

Friends, the disciples with whom we are familiar were some pretty believable people. I can believe that Jesus showed up hungry to a group of men after his resurrection and all he got was one piece of fish.  Jesus has been through a lot over the last few days and all these brothas gave him was one piece of fish.  He has been beaten and bruised, nailed and pierced, and he died but when he shows up hungry, all he got was a piece of fish – a broiled piece of fish at that.  I know I can be a little goofy but come on!!!  One piece of broiled fish!?!?!  Hilarious!

And I laugh at this because it just seems like something a group of men would do without the finesse of a woman’stouch!  For I can imagine that if Jesus would have showed up at one of my grandmother’s homes at that time, they would have gone to pulling out all kinds of food to prepare a feast for Him and that one little piece of fish that those disciples prepared would have not been an option!  My grandmothers would feed family and friends, strangers and neighbors and they would give you the very best that they had to offer.

Now, some of you are probably thinking,Delesslyn, give these men a break!  They were startled and frightened and thought they were looking at a ghost!  And to that I say, WHATEVER!  There were 11 of them and 1 of Him so if He happened to not be the resurrected Savior, well, the odds were in their favor if anything was about to go down!  I’mjust sayin!  But this is one passage of scripture that truly helps us to see the disciples in all of their humanity.  They were scared and stingy because with the number of fishermen in that bunch, they know they could have given Jesus more than one piece of fish!

So, where are we going with this?  Well, I like to laugh and so I hope you got at least a hearty chuckle out of my “deep” insights BUT more than that, I pray that when you have the opportunity to minister to those who feel like they have been to their own grave and back, that you would give them more than a piece of fish!

In other words, Jesus comes and greets them in peace.  They are shaken up because they cannot believe that they are standing in the presence of their friend.  But then he shows them his scars.  He exposes His wounds.  He reveals his brokenness.

He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I Myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.

There are people all around us who are coming to us in peace and who need for you to see them.  They are showing you their scars, revealing their shame, and admitting to their pain. They are doing so because they need you to truly LOOK at them and help them.  Some will need shelter.  Some will need a listening ear.  Some will need money.  Some will need clothes.  Some will need prayer.  Some will need food.  And I pray that my BlogFam would be prepared to meet their needs in the best way that they can.  After ALL they have been through, I pray that you would give them more than a piece of broiled fish!

Jesus says, LOOK AT ME!  It is I! So when we dismiss the homeless, the hungry, the widows, the orphans, the prisoners, and the strangers, we just might be dismissing the presence of the Lord in our midst!  Jesus did not come to them in perfection.  His body had been through some things and what He had experienced was visible so he told his disciples to LOOK at Him.  How many people have we looked over, looked past, looked around, and looked down upon because they came to show us the ugliest parts of themselves?

Everybody is not able to cover up their testimony.  Some of our brothas and sistas wear their testimonies in ways that might seem offensive or embarrassing or not socially acceptable or respectable.  BUT perhaps, when they come in peace, it is an opportunity for all of us to think about our Lord, to LOOK at our Lord, to truly SEE our Lord.  Our Lord appeared to the disciples after His resurrection with visible proof of the physical abuse that led to His death.  That was not pretty.  It was not funny.  And I just believe that He should have gotten more than one lousy piece of fish!

They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence.

Jesus graciously accepted what they offered to Him and then He affirms that he has fulfilled the prophecies of old.

He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

Friends, on today, I pray that we would all have our vision corrected so that we would also see each other.  I pray that we would not rush to judgment or run out of fear, but that we would pause, pray, and plan to serve each other in ways that will please the Lord.

Lastly, I want you to take seriously this second passage of scripture which ties it all together for our reflection on today and I pray that those who come to you in peace, showing you the ugliest parts of themselves, seeking your help, that you would respond with godly compassion and give them the best you have to offer! And know that ONE DAY -

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in,I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ [Matthew 25]

AND I also pray that if YOU are the ONE whose life feels like you have been to the grave and back, I pray that our God would lead you to find those who would give you more than one lousy piece of fish and that you would graciously receive what is being shared with you!
