Lord, STAY with Me! - Luke 24:28-29

Lord, STAY with Me!

Luke 24:28-29
As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

Greetings!

BlogFam, let me be honest with you.  I really want to rush on to the next few verses when Jesus breaks bread in their presence and they immediately recognize that this stranger with whom they have conversed along the road to Emmaus is the Resurrected Lord!  But I cannot ignore the two verses that precede that glorious moment.  Before the glory of the Lord was revealed to them in the breaking and blessing of the bread in their presence, they FIRST invited Him to stay with them.

Friends, there are so many things that we want to see happen in our lives.  We want the Lord our God to declare, confirm, and manifest His promises in our lives.  I believe that many of us want to believe in a greater power beyond ourselves that will come and transform our lives like never before.  I think that we want to see great things happen in our lives and in the lives of those we love; however, in reading this passage – especially the verses for today, there is one step that we try to skip over, get around, avoid and it is the exact thing that these two men did BEFORE Jesus fully revealed that He was the ONE they had hoped for.

As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening;
the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

Friends, these men asked Jesus to STAY WITH THEM.  I know this might sound so simple but PLEASE do not miss or dismiss it.  Do you realize that had they let Jesus keep going we might not have the verses that come after this?  Do you realize that there are some things that our Lord wants to reveal to you and until you invite the Lord into your heart, your situation, your relationships, your career, your prayers, your worship, your LIFE – well, Jesus might keep walking down the road?

Have you ever heard the song – What God has for me, it is for me?  I really do enjoy that song.

What God has for me, it is for me.

What God has for me, it is for me.

I know without a doubt, that He will bring me out

What God has for me, it is for me.

I really do appreciate this song of affirmation and I have sung it several times as an encouragement to myself and to others.  However, in light of this text, I AM CLEAR that what God has for me, IT is for me but IT might not happen if I do not first ask the Lord God to STAY with me.  If I allow the one who has everything I need to go on without me or if I ignore the ways He has spoken to me in the past or even in the present moments, I just might miss out on the opportunity to possess whatever God has reserved for me because I make the choice to NOT invite Him to stay.

My sistas and brothas, it was not enough for these two men to walk and talk with Jesus on the road to Emmaus.  It was not enough for them to recount the events of Jesus trial, conviction, crucifixion, burial and reports of His empty tomb.  It was not enough for them to hear Jesus explain the historical significance of all that had happened and how He was at the center of it all.  None of that walking and talking about Jesus was enough.  They did not get a revelation about Jesus until they invited Him in to STAY with them.

You may have been walking and talking with Jesus for a long time.  You may have been on the mainline telling Jesus what you want. You may have been interacting with Jesus or the people of Jesus for as long as you can remember.  BUT NONE of that matters, UNTIL you invite Jesus in to STAY with you.

I know this sounds so simple.  I know you probably already know this but today I am struck that these men were spending quality time with Jesus –walking and talking with Jesus BUT He was a stranger to them UNTIL they invited Him in to STAY with them.  Friends, perhaps this is where you are.  You have been saying and doing ALL of the right things for Jesus.  You do all you can to show that you have a relationship with Jesus,  You do everything on the outside to make it look like you believe in Jesus on the inside BUT the TRUTH is that Jesus has not been invited in to your heart to STAY.  We can say and do so many good things and we might even say or do so IN THE NAME OF JESUS; BUT NONE of that will ever fill the absence of Jesus presence in your heart.

Therefore, Luke 13:24-27 says -

“Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’

“But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’

“Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’

“But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’

My friends, I pray that on today you would take seriously YOUR response and responsibility to INVITE Jesus to come into your heart to STAY.  It is NOT enough to be acquainted with the actions of Jesus or familiar with the words of Jesus or to walk and talk with Jesus or eat and drink with Jesus or even listen to the teachings of Jesus. YOU must ask Him to stay or He will continue to move on.  AND while, whatever God has for you is for you, the fullness of all that God has for you may be withheld simply because you never invited Jesus to STAY.

BlogFam, on today, let us ALL ask Jesus to STAY with us.  I know you may already be saved or perhaps you have never invited Him as your Savior, either way, today is a GREAT DAY to ask the Lord to STAY with you.  Tomorrow is not promised and the evening has set in and it is time for you to ask the Lord to STAY with you.  The day is almost over and you do not know what the future holds and it is time for you to ask the Lord to STAY with you.  So, let’s ask Him together -

Lord, stay with me.

Lord, stay with me.

Lord, stay with me.

AMEN.
