RESURRECTION NONSENSE! - Luke 24:9-11

RESURRECTION FOOLISHNESS

Luke 24: 9-11
When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.

Greetings!

BlogFam, I will admit to you that there are some things about what we “believe” about Jesus and our life as followers of Jesus that just do NOT make sense!  It’st he truth!  We can offer no reasonable explanation for so many things that we accept by faith.  There are some questions that I cannot answer except to say I trust that they are true by faith.  There are some discussions that are a waste of time to have because the premise of such arguments will require that one’s faith be actively engaged in order to even begin to attempt to understand.  If we were to try to make sense of everything we proclaim as believers, we would fall short and without a doubt become more frustrated than faithful.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. This is a powerful verse and I do not think that it is restricted to the physical or tangible manifestation of what we desire to see in our lives.  I want to suggest to you that our faith gives our belief substance.  Our faith substantiates our belief in ways that give us hope for whatever the situations or circumstances we might face.  Our faith is the evidence that those things that we have not seen yet and possibly more important, the things we will never see, are worthy of our reception.

Allow me to re-state this verse in light of the resurrection of Jesus –

Faith is the substance of the resurrection we hope for.

Faith is the evidence of the resurrection we have not(yet) seen.

In our text today, the women have come to tell the disciples some really great news about their Lord.  They came to share what their eyes had seen and what their ears had heard.  They had gone to the tomb but they did not find the body of Jesus and two divine messengers informed them that Jesus was not there. He had risen.  And those same two messengers reminded them of the words Jesus had spoken while He was alive.

Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:  ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’

These women came to share a message with the disciples that just did not make sense. The disciples did not believe the women. They did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. I can only imagine that this conversation made everybody present feel uncomfortable.  But how else does one explain what happened?  What explanation would be good enough when trying to convince others about the resurrection of a dead man?  How does one begin to wrap their mind around this phenomenon?  BY FAITH.

Faith is the substance of the resurrection we hope for.

Faith is the evidence of the resurrection we have not(yet) seen.

The proclamation of the resurrection by these women did not make sense to the disciples.  It did not makes sense in that moment which makes one question how much the disciples accepted as truth throughout their time with Jesus before this moment.  If they believed the words of the Lord for the things that they could see, why did they not now believe the words of the Lord for the resurrection they hoped for,the resurrection they had not yet seen?

FAITH.

Friends, the paradox is that without faith the resurrection is nonsense and with faith it is still nonsense – as in it just does not make sense that the systemic functions of a dead person are not in operation yet Jesus is NOT in the tomb. Jesus is NOT there, where dead people are supposed to be.  Those two messengers said Jesus is alive.  The women have not yet seen Him but they have come to proclaim that their FAITH is the substance of the resurrection they had hoped for and that Jesus had spoken of before; and their faith is the evidence of the resurrected body they had not yet seen.

My sistas and brothas, the key to making sense out of what makes NO sense at all is FAITH.  FAITH is not a cop out.  FAITH is not a sign of weakness – physically or intellectually.  FAITH is not some careless provisional rationale proffered as an excuse for the things you cannot explain.  Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.  Our faith substantiates our belief in ways that give us hope for whatever the situations or circumstances we might face.  Our faith is the evidence that those things that we have not seen yet and possibly more important, the things we will never see, are worthy of our reception.

And so, on today, I pray that the Lord would increase our FAITH.  I pray that our FAITH in God would not be shaken by the criticism or the unbelief of others.  I pray that we would boldly initiate and continue conversations about this resurrection nonsense.  I pray that WHATEVER you stand in need of on today would be made manifest according to your FAITH and that your FAITH in God would be a witness to others that Jesus IS alive!
