BlogFam, have you ever experienced having a second wind? Do you even know what this means? This expression is commonly used when people feel an additional rush of energy or sudden surge of inspiration in any given moment. A second wind usually comes when whatever kept them going before is dwindling. A second wind is like an unexpected shock to your system that re-energizes you for the task at hand. And your second wind may overtake you after a conversation with a good friend, or observation of another’s accomplishment, or by the adoption of a new attitude or perspective. Have you ever experienced having a second wind?
We all need a second wind sometimes even a third, fourth or fifth wind just to keep on keeping on pass a moment of doubt, discouragement, and disappointment. We have all at some point needed a second wind to come through and propel us forward after we have stopped in our own tracks. We have all needed a second wind to remind us why we do what we do, to remind us of God’s purpose, to remind us that people are counting on us, to remind us that we were created to accomplish this task. We all have stood in need of a second wind.
So, have you ever prayed for a second wind to come? I know you and I have all received that initial inspiration to get started but I am willing to admit that I have needed a second wind to make it to the finish line. There have been many tasks that I have begun and after I got started there were people, places or things that got me sidetracked and I needed a second wind to refocus my vision and revive my energy for the situation at hand. I have prayed for the Lord to give me a second wind. And my sistas and brothas, that is nothing to be ashamed of. We have all fallen off the wagon. We have all strayed off the course. We have all had moments where we hesitated to keep pressing on for one reason or another. And so today I just want encourage you to look to the hills from whence cometh your help and ask the Lord to give you a second wind!
Over half of the New Testament was written by a man named Paul who needed a second wind many times over. In our scripture for today, he reveals a vulnerable situation in his ministry. He says –
Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Friends, I know that some of you are wondering how this familiar curve ball in the ministry of Paul is relevant to our conversation on today. And I want to explain. We do not know exactly what this thorn was in Paul’s flesh but it was clearly an attack from the enemy, an attempt by external forces to halt the progression of the apostolic call on Paul’s life. Paul called on the Lord to take whatever it was away from him, much in the same way we ask the Lord to remove certain things out of our lives so that we will not be burdened by such afflictions or affections.
In response to Paul’s prayer for relief, the Lord gave Paul a second wind. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul is given the grace of our Lord to endure the thorn and to overcome his weakness with strength. The Lord sent Paul a second wind to keep on keeping on. Instead of removing the thorn in Paul’s flesh, he sends Paul a second wind, an unexpected shock to his system that re-energized him for the task at hand. And instead of focusing on the thorn, he now celebrates the power of Christ that rests on him which motivates him to press on through weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and difficulties. For he now knows, what we must learn, that when whatever kept us going before is dwindling, even if the Lord does not remove it, the Lord will give us a second wind of grace and strength to keep on moving forward!
BlogFam, on today, I pray that the Lord would grant you a second wind. I pray that when you are having a moment of doubt, discouragement, and disappointment, you would receive the grace of our Lord to relieve you or to empower you to endure. I pray that you would know the rush of the Holy Spirit’s power to propel you into your next. I pray that you would see your weakness as another opportunity for the Lord to stand strong in you and that you would refuse to back-down until there is a favorable change in the direction and speed of the winds in your life. I pray that the coming shift in the winds in your life would push you to praise the Lord as never before and that whenever you are in need of a second wind, you would always be reminded that the grace of our Lord is sufficient even in this.
