Lenten Devotional: FEED ME

Matthew 4:3-4
The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Greetings!
BlogFam, today we begin a new journey.  Today, we begin a time of sacrifice and surrender.  Today, we avail ourselves to the transformation of our minds, our bodies, and our spirits that will come as a result of fasting.  Fasting is an ancient spiritual practice and one that individuals and groups have begun together, struggled with together, benefited together, and completed together.  Today we begin a new journey - together.  Will you join me?

There are no specific rules as it relates to how you embark upon this journey.  Your fast may be the denial of a certain food or activity.  Your fast may be the incorporating into your lifestyle healthy habits of the mind, body, or spirit that you have neglected until now.  The key is that you prayerfully discern what God may be calling for you to fast in this season and that you wisely make the necessary preparations you need in order to complete this journey [i.e. – doctor consultations, dietary limitations, children considerations, etc.].

Fasting is a spiritual practice that we commit to God and I pray that as you move forward along this journey, you will hold fast to your commitment to God and to yourself.  Your fast may not be the same as the next person, but whatever you choose, stay true to it.  And if or when you get off track or you eat what you were not supposed to eat or do what you are not supposed to do based on your commitment, you can begin again.  Please do not beat yourself up; however, at the same time, do not let this be a license to be haphazard with such a serious commitment.

Friends, I am praying for you and with you as we go and grow through this journey.  I am praying that you will experience God in ways you have never seen and that your soul would prosper above all.  I am praying that you would stay focused, disciplined, and true to yourself.  I am praying that you would be so resolved in your commitment that when the temptations arise – and they will come the day you begin this journey – you will hear the voice of the Holy Spirit whispering, “Trust in Me.”  I pray that when you have moments of weakness and debating within yourself why it would be OK for you to compromise, I pray that you would be reminded of our passage for today…

Matthew 4:3-4
The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,
tell these stones to become bread.”
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

My sistas and brothas, this interaction between Jesus and the tempter takes place while Jesus is in the wilderness fasting for forty days.  Food is not the only way that the tempter attempts to get Jesus off track.  Food is not the only way that the tempter attempts to get us off track.  The tempter might use food, conversations, emails, Facebook, Twitter, family, friends, co-workers, classmates, finances, prestige, popularity, holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, other “special” events, and so many other tactics in order to steal, kill, and destroy the transformation of your mind, your body, and your spirit that our Lord wants to perform in you.

So, as we begin this journey, keep these things in mind –
  • Your identification as a son or daughter of the Most High who is powerful enough to keep you throughout the duration of this fast;
  • Your articulation of the word of God which will empower you to overcome the words in conversations with yourself and others that come to take your focus of the fast; AND
  • Your sanctification as your mind, body, and spirit are all conformed to the likeness of Jesus Christ as a result of this fast

BlogFam, I am excited about this new journey and I know that over the next 40 days, we will see miraculous moves of God and we will hear awesome testimonies about God, and we will feel the presence of God in mighty ways!

So, let the journey begin…

What are your initial thoughts as we begin this 40 days of fasting?  How are you expecting God to feed you during this fast?  What challenges do you anticipate that we can begin to pray with you on in advance?

My sister, GOD Bless for the guidance, encouragement and example. For it is true that not only do we deny the flesh but dedicate our all (mind, body and spirit) that we receive HIS truth unobstructed and walk in HIS power uninhibited.
