Going To War
When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you. When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and address the army. He shall say: “Hear, Israel: Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not panic or be terrified by them. For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” Then the officers shall add, “Is anyone afraid or fainthearted? Let him go home so that his fellow soldiers will not become disheartened too.”
Quasi-Fainting Spells: A Warrior's Prayer
BlogFam, Let us pray...
Heavenly Father, we come to you as warring, wearied, and even worried vessels on today. We come to you with faith the size of a mustard seed and some of us, barely that. We come to you pleading with you to not look over or look beyond our situation. Our feeble vision has our attention focused on the people, places, and things that are greater and we need a corrective lens of faith to remind us that you are the same God who brought us up out of the last person, place, or thing that seemed at that time so much more than we could bear.
Today, we feel like some of the soldiers in Deuteronomy 20 except we are on the battlefield of our own lives – fighting to stay alive, to remain sane, and to keep a level head. Today, we are going into battle against our enemies and the word from on high is to “Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not panic or be terrified by them.”
Lord, in this moment, we admit that our faith is fading and we are fainting fast. Fainting is a sudden, brief loss of consciousness caused by a drop in blood flow to the brain. Well, our spiritual state feels much like the same. Lord, we feel like there has been a sudden, brief loss of our communion with you caused by a drop in the flow of our faith to our hearts. We confess that we are having a fainting spell in our faith that is producing symptoms such as lacking brightness, vividness, clearness, strength, and courage. We are experiencing feelings of feebleness, weakness, dizziness, and exhaustion. Lord, we feel like we are about to lose consciousness of love, joy, and peace.
So with the little bit of faith we feel that we have in this moment, Lord, we look to YOU. For YOU are the LORD our God. We look to YOU. For YOU are the one who goes with us to fight for us against our enemies. We look to YOU. For YOU are the one who will give us victory! And Lord when we are distracted by the enemy inside of our own minds – worry, doubt and fear; OR when we are discouraged by our fellow soldiers – family or friends, church members or co-workers – who are afraid and experiencing their own fainting spells; May we look to YOU so that our faith will not fade out and then we miss out on the victory of YOU bringing us out.
The psalmist declares that I had fainted, UNLESS I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Well, Lord, in this moment, I declare that I believe that you are good. Lord, I decree that I believe that you will be good to me. AND Lord, I definitely believe that I will see your goodness even as I live in the midst of this!
Lord, I will NOT faint. I will walk by FAITH. And the quasi-fainting spell that the enemy thought would make me fade has no more power! IN JESUS NAME, I PRAY… AMEN!
