Do You HEAR What I Hear? - Hebrews 3:7-12

Musical Term of the Day:
Overtones – The almost inaudible higher tones which occur with the fundamental tone.  They are the result of the vibration of small sections of a string (instrument) or a column of air.

Hebrews 3:7-12
So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion during the time of testing in the wilderness, where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did. That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, “Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.  So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’” See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.

Do You HEAR What I Hear?

“Something” told me to do/go___________________________.  Have you ever made that statement?  Have you ever referred to the sweet voice inside of your heart as “something?”   How many times have you ignored that “something” and then regretted doing so later on? When was the last time “something” gave you an instruction and you obeyed because somehow you knew it was definitely the right thing to do? What is that “something?”

“Something” has been called by many names – Sixth Sense, Inner Voice, Intuition, Gut Instinct, or simply, A Feeling.  I call that “Something,” the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit lives inside of us to teach us, lead us, guide us, comfort us, correct us, and love us. The voice of the Holy Spirit inside of us is the divine overtone.  The voice of the Holy Spirit inside of us is the almost inaudible higher tone which occurs with the fundamental tones created by the Original Composer of our lives. The voice of the Holy Spirit whispers messages from heaven to our hearts.  The Holy Spirit is God with us.

When I think about how awesome our God is – the creator of heaven and earth, the Alpha and Omega, the one who has numbered every hair on our heads, and bottled every tear – I am amazed that God would choose to live inside of our hearts.  I am in awe that perfection would breathe life into us and love us more than we have minds to comprehend.  I am astounded by the grace and mercy of our God to continue to speak when we so often dismiss that holy “something” as being nothing at all.

BlogFam, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion during the time of testing…” We have all heard that holy “something.”  We have all hardened our hearts.  We have all turned a deaf ear.  We have all been tested and rebelled by doing things our own way and rejecting the instruction from heaven’s heart to ours. BUT today is a NEW day!  So, as the Holy Spirit says: TODAY, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you have done in the past. TODAY, I invite you to listen to that almost inaudible higher tone. TODAY, I hope you refuse to dismiss what that holy “something” is saying directly to you.  Friends, Do you HEAR what I hear?

My sistas and brothas, you are so special to God and God has a message that is tailor-made just for you.  BUT how do you expect to receive the fundamental notations from God when your heart is always going astray, and you have not known God’s ways?  Please know that there are consequences when we choose to disobey the word, the will, and the ways of God.  One of those consequences is the fading voice of the Holy Spirit.  For why should the Holy Spirit compete for our attention when we clearly choose sin over righteousness?  Why should we be privileged to the rest that comes from God when we refuse to be still and listen?  On the contrary, we must “See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.” And if you have taken the road toward rebellion or walked down the street of selfishness or hit the highway of the haughty, TODAY, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you have done in the past.  TODAY, I invite you to listen to that almost inaudible higher tone. TODAY, I hope you refuse to dismiss what that holy “something” is saying to you.

TODAY, I pray that you would be still and strain your heart’s ear toward the throne of heaven for I believe our God has something to say especially to YOU. The overtones of heaven are speaking to you. Do you HEAR what I hear? I pray that your answer is YES!
