The KEY Signature - Matthew 3:16-17

Musical Term of the Day:
Key Signature - The sharps or flats placed at the beginning of the staff to denote the scale upon which the music is based; sharps or flats at the beginning of each staff to indicate the key of the composition.

Matthew 3:16-17
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove,
and lighting upon him:
And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Greetings!

BlogFam,
A signature is any unique, distinguishing aspect, feature, or mark.  A signature serves to identify or distinguish a person, group, etc.  Have you ever completed an application or some other type of documentation which required a signature? Perhaps, at some point you needed your parent’s signature on a permission slip or maybe you needed your supervisor’s signature on a purchase order or a notary’s signature or seal to make a document official.  Have you ever added your own signature to a letter or an application or a check from your local financial institution?  In this age of identity theft, there are some criminals who would seek to imitate your signature for their own gain but imitation is not the real thing, no matter how close it may come to appearing as authentic.  Your signature is like none other.   Furthermore, there are certain things or next steps that cannot happen if certain key signatures are not in the appropriate places.

A signature is a special, distinctive mark that adds to the exclusivity of certain documents or even to expressions.  For example, on this blog, you may not see my handwritten signature in the traditional sense but there are certain phrases I use everyday that are my digital version of a unique distinguishing mark such as telling you  “Greetings!” to open and closing with “God loves you and I do too.” What are some other distinctive marks or features of your pattern or personality that people have come to associate with you?

Well, just as we have a unique distinguishing aspect, feature, or mark of our individual pattern or personality, the same definition can be applied to a piece of music.  Every piece of music is written in a certain key.  The key is indicated by the signature combination of sharps and flats on the staff at the beginning of any piece of musical composition.  The key signature is a vital part of the piece.  It lets the musician know where to start and gives a clue as to what notes they can anticipate in the coming measures.  Now, there are some situations where the musician may adjust the key or the original composer may change the key in another movement of the song but the key signature does not necessarily tell you that those kinds of changes to the music are coming.

In our text on today, our heavenly Father gives his own divine key signature in order to verify and validate the identity of His only Son.

I can only imagine how remarkable that moment was to SEE!  I can only imagine how beautiful it was for the heavens to open and a light that shined like the star of Bethlehem breaking forth out of the clouds. Then a single dove with the purest of white feathers gracefully fluttering into the earth, an image of the Spirit of God. I can only imagine how remarkable that moment was to see but then to HEAR a voice from heaven.  A voice that those who were there to see Jesus get baptized had never heard before.  A voice of authority yet full of compassion and assurance.  A voice that did not stutter or hesitate with its holy declaration to those in its presence.  And I can only imagine that because God is God, that the voice sounded pleasant to every ear that heard with its divine blend of light and dark tones.

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, THIS IS my beloved Son,
in whom I am well pleased.

In that precious moment, God gives the key signature for Christ to begin his earthly ministry.  In that priceless moment, God verifies the identity of His beloved Son.  In that public moment, God affirms his pleasure with Jesus. There is to be no mistake about who Jesus is.  THIS IS my beloved Son.  THIS IS the one in whom heaven is well pleased.  THIS IS the one for whom the earth had long awaited.  THIS IS the one about whom the prophets had foretold. THIS IS the ONE who had come to save all people from their sins. THIS IS the ONE.  Ladies and Gentlemen, THIS IS the one who provides the key signature for the life of love, compassion, justice, and righteousness to which we all aspire as believers.  THIS IS the ONE key that will never change and if anyone offers another, then please know that their signature is a clear mark of identity theft and it is not authentic.

Friends, I cannot speak for other faith traditions but I know that as a follower of Christ, Jesus is the key signature for my way of life.  I only pray that as people see me and hear me that they would also see that I am living my life marked by the signature of God the Father, the Beloved Son, and the Holy Ghost.  I pray that there is no confusion as to what key my life sings.  I pray that the sharps and flats that may come along the way are colorful ways that the original Composer of all life uses to give me greater opportunities to trust that all things really do work together for my good.  I pray that the key signature of my life will grant me access to the Kingdom and opportunities to advance the Kingdom of God in the earth.

And BlogFam, I pray all the same for you!  I pray that the key signature of your life  begins and ends with Jesus such that there will not be a question as to whom you belong.  I pray that you would experience precious, priceless, public and private moments where the original Composer of our lives would identify you as His beloved son or daughter.  I pray that you would rely on the power beyond yourself to live, move, and have your being in the Key of God’s authentic Love.  AND I pray that because your identity is clear, heaven would open up to you and that you would be blessed to be a blessing beyond your wildest imagination!
