Is your LIGHT Estinto? A Plea from Jesus and Dr. M.L.King, Jr. - Matthew 5:14-16

Is your LIGHT Estinto? A Plea from Jesus and Dr. M.L.King, Jr.

Musical Term for the Day:
estinto - becoming extinct
Matthew 5:14-16 [KJV]
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and
glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 5:16 [AMP]
Let your light so shine before men that they may see your moral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble, and good deeds and recognize and honor and praise and
glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Greetings!

Ladies and Gents, Today is the day we celebrate the life and legacy of one of many countless heroes and she-roes of the Civil Rights movement.  The third Monday of January has been designated as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law on November 2, 1983 and after this historical act, Mrs. Coretta Scott King declared, “This is not a black holiday; it is a people holiday.”

On this day we are reminded of how far we have come and still how far we have to go as it relates to issues of justice and equality for all people around the world.  On this day we are reminded of the sacrifices of time, talents, treasures, and lives with the intentional purpose to make this nation a better place for people of all races, ethnicities, ages, gender, sexual orientations, religions, veteran status, and disabilities.  On this day we are reminded that the struggle continues and we all have our own cross to bear in order to seek the transformation that has yet to be realized. On this day we are reminded that those who believe in the Light of the world have allowed their disconnection from the Light to cause their own light to become estinto.

BlogFam, ye are the light of the world! This statement by our Lord is a clear description of our identity as hidden in Him. We are the LIGHT!  Light is defined as something that makes things visible or affords illumination.  I have a few questions.  In what ways does your life make things visible?  How does your light expose the darkness of injustice or discrimination?  Where have you allowed your light to afford illumination to the ignorance of those who deny present day racism, classism, sexism, or ageism?  In what ways are you letting your light so shine that others may see your moral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble, and good deeds and recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father who is in heaven?

In the following passage, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s reflections in the 1960s point to how people of faith were intimidated by the external social pressures and hid their light.  Unfortunately, his sentiments are not so far from our present day reality.

“I must honestly reiterate that I have been disappointed with the church. I do not say this as one of those negative critics who can always find something wrong with the church.  I say this as a minister of the gospel who loves the church; who was nurtured in its bosom; who has been sustained by its spiritual blessings and who will remain true to it as long as the cord of life shall lengthen…Some (ministers) have been outright opponents refusing to understand the freedom movement and misrepresenting its leaders; all too many others have been more cautious than courageous and have remained silent behind the anesthetizing security of stained-glass windows…In deep disappointment I have wept over the laxity of the church.  But be assured that my tears have been tears of love.  There can be no deep disappointment where there is not deep love… Yes, I see the church as the body of Christ.  But, oh!  How we have blemished and scarred that body through social neglect and through fear of being nonconformists… But again I am thankful to God that some noble souls from the ranks of organized religion have broken loose from the paralyzing chains of conformity and joined us as active partners in the struggle for freedom… Some have been dismissed from their churches, have lost the support of their bishops and fellow ministers.  But they have acted in the faith that right defeated is stronger than evil triumphant… I hope the church as a whole will meet the challenge of this decisive hour...” **

In other words, why are we as people of faith content with disregarding the command from the most radical Social Activist who walked the face of this earth, Jesus Christ? Why are we satisfied with our light becoming extinct in the midst of poverty, hunger, lack of healthcare for all people?  Friends, we ARE the light of the world!  We ARE the ones who are to let our light so shine before all people by being actively engaged in the struggle for justice for all people.  The weapons you use to engage this battle are innumerable because we are all gifted in so many different ways but none of us should celebrate the witness of silence when it comes to issues of justice!  None of us should be satisfied with hiding the light that our God has given us to shine for the world to see how we are to live in this dark world.  We ARE the light of the world!

Dr. King’s reflection that I have shared with you is a simple, yet profound call for people of faith to BE the light of the world!  WE are to lead in every aspect of this society.  WE are to lead with love, compassion, nonviolence. We are to lead with eyes open to see how we may be guilty of hiding our light.  We are to lead with ears open to hear the cries of those who need relief from the pressures of economic and other forms of discrimination.  We are to lead with hearts open to the despair of those who have not seen light for so long and may have forgotten that they, too, can be light-bearers.

BlogFam, is your light estinto?  If it is, I invite you to be reignited by the Light of the World, whose light is incapable of losing its spark.  When we reignite our passion to see the justice and equality for people all over this world and in our own neighborhood, we are living the words of this Gospel.  For, it is ONLY then that we can meet the challenges of this decisive hour!

Let YOUR light shine!
